They are, as of yesterday, taking 3-4 months for routine requests for all passport needs and 6 weeks for expedited.
If folks have just sent in a request for a renewal, update, extra pages, they may not have it in time for the Race.
IF they have sent in a passport with the paperwork for processing (any kind of passport need), they cannot call the Passport Agency unless it is 2 weeks or less before their trip, Passport folks will not talk with them (unless you get really “lucky”). Rather, they must go online to the Passport Website:
www.travel.state.gov and make an inquiry. They will need to obtain their
Passport Application Locator Number. While the email site says it takes 3-5 days for a response, in actuality, it can take 2 weeks.
IF they have a passport in this very long process and they have just sent it in or not yet sent it in, the only viable recourse (per them) is to make an appointment to go to one of the passport offices in person, and with ALL the forms completed with documentation (raised seal birth certificate, photos, etc.) and fee and apply for a new passport. This is true whether they have applied for a new one, a replacement, a renewal, or extra pages. Those offices are in Philadelphia, Miami, New Orleans,
The State Department telephone number to call is 1-877-487-2778 (7:30 am EDST-8 PM EDST). If they wait until later in the day, they may get a recording which says the call volume is too high, to call back later, and then the call is cut off.
