eing a missionary is so amazing
The freedom that comes with my ONLY job being to seek God above all else and have a yes in my Spirit to whatever He calls me to, is incredible!
Through that being my only job, I hit a bump in the road.
What do I do when I reach a dry season?
A period of time where I don’t feel like I’m connecting with God. I don’t hear Him speaking to me as clearly or at all.
It’s like working the drive through window at Chickfila (naturally) but there’s no window. WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU SUPPOSE TO DO?!
The ability to do your job seems impossible because of the lack of necessary resources.
But just like Chickfila workers walk outside to take your order on a tablet while standing in the hot sun, God always reveals his goodness in the midst of our desert
Even if it’s just in the small things
Every Monday we go over the schedule for the week with our host.
Well, one particular Monday the schedule felt a bit overwhelming and I started to panic at the thought of not having rest for the week.
Then lo and behold the next 3 days we ended up having at least 3 HOURS of free time to fill with rest and relaxation….
Tuesday arrives and it is suppose to be a very late night of preaching at a village about an hour away, resulting in dinner being eaten after 8 o’clock. In another panic, I head straight for the local confident store to stock up on the all the sugary goods they have to offer.
Then lo and behold as we are driving down the road, I mention “Pastor Joe, if you see any peanut cake on the side of the road let me know because I would like to buy some.” (Because we all know I needed more sugar after loading up at the convenient store…) And next thing I know he’s pulling over, buying us popcorn-peanut snacks and then pulling over a few minutes later to buy us bananas and more popcorn-peanuty goodness!
During this time of snack stopping and stocking I proceed to tell my friend Hannah “I really want to grow in my ability to listen to the Holy Spirit while giving a message. I’ve grown from reading it directly off my phone, to writing down every word I want to say but only glancing at it. But I want to get to where I have only a passage of scripture and allow the Holy Spirit room to give me the rest of the words.”
Then lo and behold we walk through a village to sit down outside a kind family’s house and Pastor Joe says “okay, share a message with them. They aren’t believers, share something about Jesus with them so you can plant a seed.”
Uhmmmmmm excuse me?
Even though all these situations are so small, they spoke VOLUMES to me. I didn’t sit down in prayer about them. I didn’t even mention them to God. I had conversations with my teammates, God saw my heart and He showed me His goodness, faithfulness and provision in the midst of my desert.
He showed me that I was “proactive” out of fear instead of bringing Him my concerns and trusting Him to provide because He’s a good Father.
So if you’re in a dry season of life, relax! It happens to everybody. Even to those that our SOLE PURPOSE is to connect with God and help others connect with Him too.
Instead of fretting about your lack of connection, try looking at the still small details of your life that He so graciously provides everyday!
He’s a good Father! He’s not going to leave you high and dry!
