Guatemala has been interesting!
Coming into this month I was a little skeptical of the living situation
Living with 24 other people in one house made me nervous because the larger the group is, the more I lose my personality
So I was prepared for God to grow me and stretch me in the aspect of community
As usual…I was wrong
Community has been incredible and God surrounded me with really awesome people as He walked me through growth, stretching and healing in other aspects of my life
This month I lived in one house with 24 other people
I walked down the roads of Chimaltenango and breathed in straight truck exhaust
I road the local chicken bus and tuk-tuks
I ate real, authentic Guatemalan food, including a hotdog with 4 weenies inside
I painted my face and ran in a torch run for Independence Day
I hiked volcanos
I got lice and KICKED ITS BUTT!
I worked at Grace English School, teaching English to elementary, middle and high school students. English is a very important thing to learn in this culture because if you can’t afford to go to school or college, then English is your only hope in surviving and making a decent living
I worked along side Hannah, Logan and Charly
Hannah is one of my squad mates and I have absolutely loved hearing her testimony and getting to know her on a deeper level. She is absolutely hilarious!
Logan is our ministry host and he is one of the coolest, busiest and most interesting humans I have ever met. He has a beautiful vision for Grace and the students who attend school there. He has gone over and beyond the call of duty to serve all 25 of us, and he has just loved us really well. I can say with confidence that we have genuinely become friends over this past month and I will miss him greatly.
Charly is one of the students that attends Grace and has been an absolute life saver this month. He has such a deep deep passion for learning English that he would write down every word in the English dictionary that he didn’t know and bring that list to class for us to teach him. He has an awesome dream to get a job at a call center here in Guatemala, however, he may now desire to become a translator for mitionaries. Fingers crossed! He is a really stellar dude who translated all day every day for us gringos. He too has become one of my close friends and I will miss him dearly.
So pretty much…. I’m a local now
Guatemala has been hard but so wonderful and I can’t wait to come back!
Here is just a snapshot of my time time here in GUAT!
