“It’s amazing the length to which God will show you His love, if you’re willing to be a bit bold… It has no limits.” -My journal entry from a few days ago.
A few days ago, I met a few young men while doing some outreach in the middle of Calama. Our goal was to pray for people, and we had about 2 hours. Originally I passed by these guys but I decided to turn around and make a connection: I asked about the Boston Bruins hat. This was a bit uncomfortable for me since I don’t speak the language fluently, but they understood me well enough, and I found out they speak some English.

Turns out, they don’t know what hockey is here in the desert. But this simple question led to 40 minutes of talking and getting to know them. They’re 18 and 19 years old and are a part of the Chilean military. We had a lot of similar interests: nothing different from any normal American teen or young adult. They like music by Michael Jackson, Imagine Dragons, and Kiss. Some of their favorite movies included Minions, Harry Potter, The Avengers, and Lord of the Rings. They had questions about the USA and I had questions about Chile. We had a good time talking about our countries and our interests together.
Eventually I asked them what they want to do after the military (they only have 1 year of service right now) and they said they want to be doctors, lawyers, and police officers. Then they asked me about my work and what I want to do… so I got to share with them about my life and why I want to be a missionary: my life belongs to the Lord and His love for me is limitless. When I had to leave, I got to pray with them: I prayed over their lives and they prayed over mine.

This encounter taught me that it doesn’t take an extraordinary act of courage to show others love, instead God can take seemingly ordinary moments and turn them into extraordinary encounters in which He provides opportunities to show others His love, and it only takes a bit of willingness and boldness to step out of our comfort zones. Thankful for the jokes, the laughs, the stories, and the time to pray with my 4 new friends.
