Crazy traffic, pollution, apartment buildings and people everywhere, noodles and rice for days, and a language I still can’t understand. While all these words describe China, these are not the things I think about when picturing this amazing country. These things are not what I love or will miss yet again after leaving for the second time. It’s not what my heart will long to go back to. My love for China looks a bit different than one would picture.
When picturing China I see a small village nestled in a row of trees. I pictures a gated compound off the small road. This is where my heart has fallen so deeply in love with this country. Behind the big brown gate sits a little piece of the kingdom of heaven. Here there is brokenness but also healing, there is heartache but also so much peace, there are tears but also so much joy and above all there is love. This is where the Holy Spirit is reigning in China. This is were the lame walk, blind eyes see, the deaf hear, orphans are adopted and where many miracles take place.
Every morning I woke up looking forward to my day. I looked forward to when the clock said 8:30 each morning. That is when I got to go see God’s little miracles. Precious babies just waking up from their nights of rest, just as excited to see me as I was to see them. Tiny babies all snuggly and cute. Big brown eyes looking up at me just wanting and needing to be loved.
My days were filled with what the “world” has outcast, what the world calls broken but I see so much beauty in all their brokenness. What may not be exciting to the world is thrilling to me because I could see the Lord at work in them. You see every baby that I had the opportunity of taking care of this month had a special need. From heart disease to Down Syndrome. These babies were more than likely abandoned because of these defects.
My days were filled with baby giggles, watching milestone take place, bottle feedings, play time, walks and swinging in the back yard, and nannies talking in Chinese, which I still have no clue what they were saying. We soon learned to just laugh at each other. Some days were slow and yes I did get tired sometimes but God is truly at work behind the brown gate. I am so thankful that I was able to be a part of it.
As month one has come to an end, a piece of my heart has stayed in China behind the brown gate. It is a place that is so special to me. It is were I ended such an amazing journey of my own race and began a new journey that I am sure will be just as amazing. Now that God has taken me in somewhat of a circle. I am so excited to continue what He has planned for this exciting season of my life.
