“I’m trying to find myself.” I find this to be a common phrase used, especially among my generation. But what does this common saying really mean? Yahoo’s “best answer” tells me that, “finding yourself means finding the you that needs no outside influences…it means reflection of self and knowing what you want and where you want to be…every person’s journey is their own to make…and no one can tell you how to go about it.”

While I can agree with this answer, I believe there are a lot of us who are getting it ALL WRONG! The world we live in tells us that we must step out and do extraordinary things to discover who we “truly” are. Travel the world, going on a big adventure, dreaming big, making money, reaching out of your comfort zone etc. The list goes on, and it is a great list; however, my biased opinion is that there is only one direct path to truly discovering who you are, and that my friends, is through CHRIST!

If finding yourself means finding the you that needs no outside influence, then why look anywhere other than the cross? 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

When you choose God, He chooses you! Through the help of the Holy Spirit, that lives inside of each and every one of us we are able to resist temptation. No outside influence could ever be greater than the Spirit that dwells inside of you. Living for God means becoming fully aware of the power of the Holy Spirit, and allowing yourselves to listen to it. Then you are able to move with no outside influences! When your steps come from God, they are greater than any steps you could ever make on your own!

You want to reflect on yourself, discovering what you want and where you want to be? It is simple really. In Genesis it states that God made man, and man was created in His image. When you look at your reflection in the mirror you are looking into the face of God. Bold statement, I know, but listen to this fact again. YOU WERE CREATED IN GOD’S IMAGE! And I don’t know about you, but my God does not make mistakes! His creations are hand crafted with beautifully imperfect detail. Allowing yourself to draw near to your Creator allows you to learn His heart, and in return He will show you yours. When you draw near to His heart, He draws near to yours offering peace, wisdom, and insight. “My son, do not lose sight of these- keep sound wisdom and discretion, and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck. Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” Proverbs 3:21-24. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that this journey in “finding yourself” is to ultimately find a path where you no longer fall flat on your face time and time again. Well, guess what.. Your Heavenly Father doesn’t want to continuously watch you fall either. That is why He offers you abundant love, grace, and wisdom. Love, so that you never have to question who you are and your existence. After all, you were created by the maker of heaven and earth, you are just as wonderful as they are. Grace, so that you are constantly reminded that when you do fall you can come running back into God’s opened arms. Last and certainty not least.. WISDOM. The tool that God offers us, and can allow us to “walk on your way securely, [with feet that] will not stumble.”

“Every person’s journey is their own to make…and no one can tell you how to go about it.” I can find lots of truth in the statement; however, it still rubs me the wrong way. I believe every person’s journey WITH GOD is their own, and GOD will be the creator of that path. No one can tell you how to go about that path, because it is for you and your Creator to figure out together. So, instead of going out and searching for yourself, first seek your Heavenly Father and I can promise the rest will fall into place. The reality is that when you find God, you find yourself.

God did create humans to have unique characteristics and purpose; however, He designed you also to have a commonality of contentment with your life through His will. We discover our true identity the more closely we are drawn to Him.

So choose God, because He is always choosing you, and discover who He has called you to be!
