Month Three: Harba Chule, Ethiopia
November 2015
Top moments from Ethiopia
1. Going to live back in bible times, very few cars. The donkeys, chickens, dogs, goats, sheep, and horses make up for the lack of cars. Markets, no electricity, the community going to one of the two wells to get water.
2. Teaching a 10th grade geography class about continental drift theory. (I have a new found respect for teachers. Class participation really makes teaching so much better and easier). Above is the teacher whose class I taught.
3. Living on a compound we referred to as “little America”. With hot showers, water we could drink from the tap, western food, movie nights with the orphaned children, a medical team from Canada that let us help them serve the community, the family from Canada that poured into us, our host and his wife who spoke life into each of us, and Caitlin from America who joined in.
4. Getting to see a baby born — all natural and no pain medication. But given soda in the middle of pushing. I have mad respect for women who have natural child births.
5. Going to teach and play games at an elementary school. Instead we walk 100 yards into the school and begin getting attacked(punched, pinched and hit on) by at least 500 children..and turning right around.
6. Learning all about reforestation and helping reforest Ethiopia one seed pod at a time.
7. Star tripping under the clear vast huge sky. We got everyone to do it! Including Dr. Azarat the Ethiopian Eye Doctor!
8. Having a kitchen where we lived. Eating thanksgiving dinner with our new family. All the Americans dressed up to celebrate and our new Canadian friends surprised us when they came to dinner dressed up.
Dinner consisted of fried chicken tenders, mashed potatoes, homemade honey mustard, green beans, Apple cobbler, cookies,
9. Morning devotionals and nightly debriefs with Ralph, Glenda, and Z. Our hosts wanted to speak life and refill us during our stay. I am so incredibly thankful for them.
10. Getting to make friends with our neighbors from up north. Our new Canadian friends were doctors, nurses, and the Born family. Helping them in the nearby clinic. Showing them a different side of Christianity. Laughing, games, movie nights.
11. Befriending three Ethiopian women who cooked for us that month. It was always so much fun helping those wonderful women in the kitchen, sneaking into the pantry to eat peanut butter or nutella. Kitchen dance parties. Learning how to make Negara. Making homemade cake and icing for birthdays.
