Hey everyone!!! It’s truly crazy how fast time can fly! With training camp right around the corner and the process of beginning to pack it’s all feeling too real. I am so excited to meet all my squad members and experience the first phase of my race in just 5 days, but on top of all that I got to experience one of the most memorable weekends. My family and I went up to Kentucky to visit good friends but also have a fundraiser event. It was supposed to be just a normal “spaghetti dinner” type of fundraiser where I got to see old friends but also meet new people, but apparently my family was only supposed to think that.
Once I arrived in Kentucky, on July 29th, both of our families caught up since it had been a while since we had all been together. Lots of laughs and stories were shared, but later that night all the jokes were put aside and I asked what the plan for the next day was supposed to be. Little did I know asking that was going to lead to my family being taunted. I wasn’t told anything except that it was going to be a very special day that was going to be very emotional for my family and everyone there. Now normally hearing that is not a terrible thing but because it was only going to “just” be a dinner then it made me suspicious but slightly terrified. There was a lot more build up throughout the rest of the night but there is no way I could describe in words the different emotions and questions I was filled with that night.
The next morning, July 30th, everything was normal and the preparation for the day had started. Food was bought and the guests started showing up. As the event went on I got to talk to many of the family’s there. A lot of good jokes, stories, laughs, smiles, memories and fellowship was shared. They were all so caring and I was grateful to see that they all came in support of me. My heart was so full I couldn’t imagine that it could get any better, but I was wrong.
As everyone was gathered around my Godfather Billy got up and announced to everyone that he had something very important to say. He asked my dad to come forward and read a prepared speech. The speech was about a man named Joe Elmore. Joe was an incredible friend to our family and my dad. He touched all our hearts, but sadly passed away due to an unexpected heart attack 6 years ago. A lot of people were devastated because he truly was an amazing guy that impacted everyone around him.
Bill then came forward again and spoke to me. He brought so much joy into my heart at that moment. I was in awe sitting there listening until the moment came…after bringing me to tears he read…”In behalf of Joe Elmore there is annual memorial fund that will be used every year toward a worthy cause. This year’s first recipient will go toward Tatyana and her trip!” I was speechless – absolutely speechless!! I truly am so grateful. This was a moment that I will never forget!!
I can’t thank everyone enough for all the support I have received. It has been a challenge, but it truly has taught me so much!
With Love,
Tatyana
