We made it to home base in Honduras after a 2 am wake up call, two short flights, and one cramped van ride.

Our tents are pitched under an “open barn” (read: roof with no walls). The homestead is protected by three dogs of various sizes, and two friendly rabbits. Bats have claimed an abandoned building on the property now known as the “bat house” along with a few strays that have taken up residence in our team outhouse…. Yea, I’ll let you imagine what having six little sets of eyes following you around is like, haha.

After we arrived to the host home, our team quickly set up camp and headed inside for dinner and to see the children for the first time. I have to admit, it was an awkward dinner. Us Racers sat at one table as the 13 kids sat at the others, all of us exchanging glances around the room. The team was wiped out after all the traveling so our hosts insisted we head to rest and rejuvenate, “We’ll save introductions for the morning so you can rest and so the kids can work up the courage to introduce themselves.”

Fast-forward just three days…

We are all laughing through dinner, intermixed throughout the tables, as Tony tries different levels of hot sauce and all of us use our best Spanglish possible. We’ve had one bible study so far and the story of these kids’ faith is so remarkably strong. With parents murdered in front of their eyes or in jail for murder, they spoke about how they prayed for safety and God quickly provided and brought them to this home. This place is a living testament of God’s vision, of the obedience of our hosts to God’s calling, and of His undying love for us all.

Spend a moment praying over His provision and love throughout your life and reflect on the topic of obedience. I know I have a lot of room for improvement.

Knowing that we still have 3 more weeks here gives me chills of excitement! Our days will be marked with morning bible studies with the niños, daily labor and schooling, a youth group visit, a birthday celebration to a lake, visits to the nearby town, and we are planning a “Girls Only Picnic” to allow the teen girls time to ask questions and open up without having Mom around. Exciting things to come this month!
