Although we are not in Haiti anymore, I still want to let you know what our month has looked like.
We had the opportunity to work with Mission of Hope. They do incredible work! We lived on one of their compounds, which also had a warehouse where they pack 90000 meals a year for children, a medical clinic run only by haitans and an orphanage with about 60 kids. Their impact is huge and it was truly a joy to get to know them.
It was an all squad month, which means all 50 of us were together. So there was definitely always something going on and I enjoyed sharing meals and time together with my bigger family. We also saw some beautiful sunrises and sunsets 🙂
Our main ministry was village time. This means we went into the villages close by and would visit the people, talk to them, pray for them and sometimes we’d show them a little demonstration of how they can take better care of their hygiene. Often in the afternoon we’d play with the kids, which was always fun but exhausting.
Sometimes we had to do some constructional work such as painting. I loved that. Especially when we got to paint houses that were finishing up and getting ready for people to move in who had lived in a tent for the past five years! It was great helping out that way. Seeing people still living in tents from the earthquake was heartbreaking. It made me realize how much help this country still needs.
For two days we helped to clean out the “amputee tent”. It was used during the disaster to do surgeries and after that it was just kind of left like that and it honestly looked like a disaster had happened. 1000s of needles and breathing tubes and all kind of stuff but a lot was still packed up. So that was definitely interesting… We helped to dust off and sort out as much as we could.
So this is it, a short recap from our month in Haiti. I loved serving in this country and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Yes, Haiti still needs a lot of help, the poverty is big and the people are desperate. But God is healing this nation and that’s so great to see!
Oh yeah, last but not least. On valentines day our boys surprised us with a dinner on the rooftop! We all dressed up and they each escorted us to the table and wrote us letters! It was a wonderful night that I will never forget. I am so thankful to run this race with these brothers. The way they love us means so much to me and I know all the other girls too.
Auch wenn wir nicht mehr in Haiti sind, möchte ich dennoch kurz schreiben, wie unser Monat ausgesehen hat.
Wir hatten die Möglichkeit mit Mission of Hope Haiti zusammen zu arbeiten. Diese Organisation leistet grossartige Arbeit in Haiti! Wir waren als ganzer Squad dort. Ich genoss es Zeit mit dieser vergrösserten Familie zu verbringen und Leute kennen zu lernen. Jeden morgen und jeden abend sahen wir einen wunderschönen sonnenauf- oder untergang.
Wir verbrachten viel Zeit in den naheliegenden Dörfer. Wir besuchten Leute, redeten mit ihnen, beteten mit ihnen und manchmal zeigten wir auch eine kurze demonstration über Hygiene. Am Nachmittag spielten wir meistens mit den Kinder. Das machte Spass, war aber auch anstrengend.
Manchmal hatten wir auch körperliche Arbeit wie zum Beispiel malen. Das machte Spass! Einmal halfen wir mit Häuser fertigzustellen wo in kürze Familien einziehen können die seit 5 Jahren in einem Zelt wohnen!
Für ein paar Tagen räumten wir das “amputierungs zelt” auf. Diese Halle wurde während dem Erdbeben für Operationen verwendet und seither liegt es still. Es sieht wirklich aus als wäre ein Disaster geschehen. 1000 von Spritzen, atmungsgeräte und alles mögliche das einfach herumliegt. Das war definitiv interessant… 🙂
Das ist ein kurzer überblick. Ich liebte es in diesem Land zu dienen und es wird immer einen speziellen platz in meinem herzen haben. Haiti braucht immer noch viel Hilfe, die Armut ist gross und die Leute sind hoffnungslos. Aber ich habe auch gesehen wie viel gutes geschieht und diese Nation langsam wieder aufgebaut wird.
