Yesterday our team headed to the barrio, on the otherside of the trash dump, for a feeding program that is run by a lady that lives there. Half of our team went on ahead with some juice while the rest of us followed about 30 minutes behind. As we headed to the dump we met up with a mass of kids heading somewhere, with bowls. We didn´t ever find out exactly where they were going. I figured they were going over to the feeding program. Immediately they started following us…several kids grabbing the hands of each of us. I was stuck in the middle as we headed into the dump and looked in front of me and behind me to see kids following behind and along side all of us. All that I could think of was that we were like the pied piper.
We continued into the dump and the kids started showing us the different paths that we could use to go across and cut a few minutes off our time. Some paths were straight through the dump and pretty steep. We looked at the kids and they led us to a different path that was not as steep. We crossed over to go to where they were supposed to have the feeding program still followed by the kids…actually by this point I think the kids where leading us. We made it over to where the rest of our team was and found out that there was no more food left.
What to do??? We had a mass of kids with us that all looked like they were hungry. So we headed to a store to get some bread to give them. Some of my team bought bread and the kids all lined up to get something to eat. Afterwards we headed back to la quinta. Once again the pied pipers. This time we took a different trail back through the cemetary. yup you read it right…through the cemetary. Here it is a pretty common thing for the kids to play or wander in parts of the cemtary (that is by the dump).
After leaving the dump we headed back to la quinta for a few moments to get some water and our soccer ball. Then off we go to a different barrio, this one closer to la quinta, to play some football (soccer) and to hang out with the kids for a few hours.
