We have had our first week of ministry. My team, as well as two others, have been teaching English, Bible, Math and ‘God’s World’ (A class that shows the boys here just how big the world is and lets them know a little more about what is out there). Next week we will doing that as well as helping with some administrative tasks.
The first couple days, I’ll admit were a little overwhelming/confusing. When I pictured going on the race, I envisioned us being on the field all bonded with the kids, hanging out and sharing life together—I’m only a little naive, I promise. 🙂 What I really didn’t think about was the time and effort it would take to build trust and relationships. I also didn’t consider the challenge of scaling the language barrier. By day two, I was just a little discouraged by the distance there seemed to be between us and the kids in the home where we are.
However, as I stepped back, prayed through and processed what was going on, and listened to the truth my amazing Squad Leader spoke into me, I came to terms with the truth. No matter where you are, relationships take time! Even without a language barrier, strangers aren’t just best friends all of a sudden.
By day three, I was so encouraged to see our team playing cards with the kids. By day four, they were showing off their back flips and trying to swing me so high in my hammock, that I may have feared for my life! 🙂
Every day gets a little better and I am confident that in 17 short days, saying Goodbye to the kids will be anything but easy!
I had many first in the last week. First ministry site. First squatty potty. First visit to the Indian Ocean. First African dance party! Can’t wait for what’s to come!
