Wow what a trip! When we were told our next stop would be Mozambique I thought, this should be interesting. Packing up and moving every month is tough. This month we packed up and stayed in a new location on average of every 2 days! Being flexible is the key.
However, to my surprise and delight it was a wonderful and memorable experience. One of the best yet! God never ceases to amaze me. Could He possibly be trying to tell me that He is taking care of it all? -Shocking!JHere are some highlights:
The day after I wrote my last blog, we set up a bus to pick us up from the local mall in Mpumalanga, South Africa. We had yet another unique opportunity to see why patience is a virtue. Yeepee, my favorite! We waited on the curb with our obscene amount of luggage for 3 hours, only then did we find that the bus had no intentions of picking us up.
Several phone calls later and 4 more hours of waiting, at about 9 pm a cab took us to dangerous part of town and dropped us off at a gas station to be picked up by yet another bus to take us to Mozambique. Those hours and those that followed brought revelation on what it is like to feel prejudice as a minority.
We were never so happy to see that crazy African bus drive up. We were finally on our way! However, the border closes at midnight so we would have to spend the night in the bus until it opened again at 6am. Sleepy-eyed and slightly delirious, we woke up to the sound of an armed guard yelling in our bus for us to get out and get in line into the cold and grey misty morning air. I felt like I was a victim in Schindler’s List forced to stand in the shuffling line surrounded by tall fences and barbed wire for hours. After about two and a half hours later we got back on the bus finally on our way for the 13 hour drive to Mozambique. It was that moment when Mark astutely pointed out that it took us 23 hours to travel 2 hours from our starting point.
I will never look at a traffic jam at home the same. J-It is a virtue!
