I decided to spend Christmas in Montana with my sister Sefora. It was a very sweet time reconnecting with her (and my brother Daniel for three days) and seeing how much they have been transformed by the Father in such a short amount of time. I am so thankful for those precious moments. While I was in Montana, I met their pastor, Mike Rozell and his wife Pam. Their love for millennials is so beautiful to me. The night before I was scheduled to leave, pastor Mike spoke to me in his office. He asked me a bit about myself, and of course, I told him I was working as a nurse before I left for the World Race in 2017. Immediately, he invited me to come to Guatemala with them the following week on a Medical mission trip. And, he offered to cover the cost! That came out of nowhere.
My flight home to Miami from Kansas City was January 5th and my flight to Guatemala from Miami was January 6th. I was there for about a week and finally flew to Miami on January 12th.
While in Guatemala, I was able to use my knowledge and skills in the triage area. Really, I see my skills as an open door. I was able to pray for many people and saw two people decide to follow Jesus!
One of the men that I saw accept Christ was coming to the clinic because of chronic headaches, depression, and anxiety. I asked him why he things he has those things wrong with him and he proceeded to share that when he was in prison some of the inmates beat him up so badly and hit his head so hard that he’s had headaches ever since. He said that the anxiety also started then. I asked him if he’s heard of Jesus. And he said he believes in God. I asked him if he’s ever heard the true story of Jesus. He said no. So, I shared it with him. I asked him what he thinks. My translator then called our Guatemalan pastor over to talk with him. The man with the headaches then began to share that he did witchcraft and has killed more people than he can count. “How could God ever forgive him?”, he asked us. Then, pastor Albert began to minister to him in Spanish. We all prayed with him together and he decided to follow Jesus! We gave him the only bible we could find, a children’s adventure bible! He was thankful. I pray he follows through and comes to the church and gets disciple by men like pastor Albert.
On a different day, we got to visit a small village affected by a volcanic eruption this past summer. Most of the patients we saw were living in a shelter. There was one mother in particular who wept as she shared that she has anxiety because she doesn’t know what to do about her children. She wants to send them to school, but the area where the school is, is very dangerous and she fears for their well-being. We prayed for them too. God, what else can we do but cry out to you?
I got to meet and spend some time with the interns and workers living and serving in Guatemala right now with Potter’s field. That was a really sweet time and I learned a lot from those guys about joy and finding joy in being a servant. They are an incredible group of kids on fire for the Lord.
I am so thankful to be home! But, I am moving this Wednesday! I am packing up all my things and moving away! I will let you guys know where I am going in the next blog! Yay!!
