What makes me happy? There are a good amount of things that make me happy, but often I find the most joy in small things. I’ve realized in the last two weeks that we’ve been visiting the orphan care points, what makes me happy is children playing. What makes me even happier, children being creative in what they play with, finding the possibilities of what they have and making them so much more. Here is the joy in my heart.

A shoe and a stick, most would say trash or at maybe a dog chew toy and some fire kindling…but that’s not here. This shoe and stick is a toy similar to the toy most of us had as a child. The one that popped up colored balls in a clear dome as we pushed it’s long yellow handle. Having never seen such toy himself this little boy and his brother run up and down the road pushing their version. Maybe they enjoy the noise that is made like some of us did with our colorful plastic versions. Maybe they enjoy the competition of it, maybe it’s a challenge for them to balance and keep the stick in the shoe? Either way they are having fun enjoying themselves, in the irony of playing with a shoe when they themselves at times are shoeless.
I wish I could say that all the children at the care points we visit were so active in their thought process. We’ve seen differences between the four and hope to introduce ways to help both the teachers and the children.
