My God is Comfort
Here in Cambodia we are entering a month long holiday season. A handful of kids who stay here in the orphanage have families and a home but the families were not able to support them so they live here, but when the holiday rolls around some of the kids return home for the month. There is a nine year old boy here named Tate. He is full of joy from the Lord, overflowing and abundant joy. The other day as his friends started to return home he was very sad, not like himself. When I asked a missionary what was wrong he told me Tate wanted to go home but he couldn’t. Even though, Tate still came to English class. Afterwards, as we all played a game, Tate stood off away from the group. The missionary here, Courtney Boy, called him over. Tate stood there, with his hands held tightly in Courtney’s. Occasionally a tear would slip out of his eye and Courtney would wipe it away before Tate even noticed. Courtney knows Tate so well and was able to bring him comfort in the way he wanted when he needed it most. Isn’t that the perfect picture of God and us? The Lord formed each and every part of me, He knows my heart, He knows when it is hurting, and He knows exactly how to heal me.
Life here is not easy nor is it comfortable. I sleep in a concrete room with a tin roof along with 6 other girls (and flies, mosquitoes, lizards LARGE spiders, etc). When it rains (which is everyday) our ceiling leaks. We eat rice for e v e r y meal. We take bucket showers and use squatty potties. This is not a comfortable life for me but MAN is it so fulfilling. Even typing these words out I’m like wow this girl is crazy why did she sign up for this, but while I may not find comfort in my 5th bowl of rice for the day I can find comfort in the Lord. Comfort is often mistaken for material objects (like your favorite sweatshirt), or food (chicken minis), or situations (living at home), but these things will never bring you true comfort. True comfort can only be given through the Lord, for He is the only one who knows our heart. Just as Courtney knew how to comfort Tate, the Lord knows how to comfort us. Rest in His arms, His promises, His love.
     Psalms 73:23
“Yet, in spite of all of this, You comfort me by Your counsel; You draw me closer to You.”
