(Yay for my first blog) This past week I have had the opportunity to reconnect with my dear friend Alyssa whom I met this summer on the missions trip I went on in July. Although traveling to the States and visiting her after 4 months is so exciting there was still the aspect of spending an entire day traveling there that is never fun and almost always boring especially when traveling alone. For some strange reason I was the only person going through customs at the time. When I made it through I was one of the few people mulling around the different gates. I had three hours to burn, what was I going to do? Let’s be honest probably take a nap. A few minutes after I sat down a girl comes from around the corner and sits right across from me. My first thoughts honestly where “you literally could have sat anywhere in this entire airport yet you chose to sit beside me, what the heck?” or “It’s early in the morning and now this is awkward. I just want to sleep!” Don’t worry, those thoughts didn’t go on for much longer.
Long story short instead of sitting there feeling annoyed and awkward that this girl sat there, I started talking to her. She was also a christian and we were able to share and encourage each other in the things we struggling with and laugh at our past terrible traveling experiences. The wait time I had been dreading zoomed by because of this lovely stranger I had the pleasure of meeting. I came across this quote which applies beautifully:
“The more I traveled the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends.”
Isn’t that SO true. Why are we so scared to simply say hi to someone and see where the conversation leads. This was a sweet reminder of why I am so excited for my coming World Race. My favourite part of traveling is reaching out and building relationships with those around me, it can be awkward and uncomfortable at times but it is almost always worth it!
