Have a faith like Her

One of our ministry’s here is in a town that is called the “slums” Costa Rica is really nice and there are people that are well off and people that have nothing. We got told we were doing this and that is was honestly pretty dangerous but they have sent teams here before and they were fine and as long as we followed directions and rules we would be safe. We got there the first day and we asked our host to tell us her story.

She has been here 23 years. When called  here her family did not support it and thought she was crazy. She knew it was Gods call though. Getting there she learned there had been 8 other churches that had tried to establish something but the mafia had killed them. This town was ran by gangs, full of trash, sick children, and lots of sexually transmitted-diseases. She bought a little building there that had before been a drug selling place and the people were not happy about it. She started getting death threats regularly for her and her family that she’d have to keep changing her phone number so they couldn’t call her. The little place she bought is right on the side of a mountain and she slowly picked away to start building on more. Once she started building it there wasn’t a roof yet so people would come in and steal everything at night and be selling it in the morning. Her and her husband had to take turns staying awake so no one would come in. She had three children during the start of this and they started feeling like she didn’t care about them and they eventually left the house and cut off ties with her some not talking to her for 7years. Her husband had a cerebral brain collapse because of all the stuff they had seen. She went through several sicknesses while trying to clean out the river for the people. Eventually the people started realizing she wasn’t there to hurt anyone but to only help people because she didn’t live there but they did. She went on to get the whole community electricity, running water, a soccer field, brought in an ambassador to get people there citizenships from Nicaragua, became a midwife for the woman that were from Nicaragua because they were scared they’d get deported if they went to the hospital, went on to get those babies citizenship and healthcare, all the children that were sick she got them better and would give all the children baths and make sure they had full stomachs. She is the person the government, blue cross, and emergency people communicate too for the community. Yet in doing all this stuff her husband forgot who she was and her children left her. Her husband eventually became better though but he can’t help in the community because his brain can’t handle everything that happens. Her children have slowly started coming back around but it’s still a process.

In telling us all of this and more she kept saying how the kingdom matters more then family or any earthly things. Gods calling is first priority in our lives and he deserves the glory.

A missions mindset has a beginning and an end BUT a KINGDOM mindset is eternal.

Have that kingdom mindset.

Can you have a faith like our ministry host?

God bless, Sydney.
