As I was sitting in a coffee shop the other day a man came up to talk to me. I don’t know why he came up, but right from the start we got into a deep conversation about sensitivity and how people become desensitized, which led to deeper conversations. Talking with him brought me to a realization about the creation of a human being. The things we hold inside of ourselves can be so easily lost, distracted, or manipulated. The revelation is how we are created in the image of God. A phrase that is reiterated so often that it can loose it’s meaning.
While we were talking he asked what my response would be to someone saying, “I can give you life.” He said to answer this aside from faith and religion, just asking as a simple question. So it took me a moment to respond but I said, “We are all living, we all have life. It is already in us, we already have it.” It is a gift. With the idea of life as a gift I started to dig, thinking about love. We all have love inside of us. Sometimes we can get the distorted view that love is something we have to earn or obtain. We can take on a completely different view of what love truly is. It i
s a gift. We do not have to work for life or love, we have already been given it. It is something that we can believe, something that we can live in.
I have had the distorted view that I have to work for love. That I have to do many deeds to receive love, because I didn’t believe that someone would love just because of who I was. There can be many ways that love can be distorted and confused, and this can involve other people altering that view. A
person may end up pushing love down, suppressing it to where they don’t feel it anymore. Thinking that it doesn’t even exist. Many things can become distorted and confused over time, not just love but other things as well, if we allow our self to stay lost and astray. Everyone longs for a love so rich that it overwhelms us.
When thinking about this it brought me back to Genesis and when man was created. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27). Then looking farther to the description of that verse, we are created in “ways in which humans resemble God, such as characteristics of reason, morality, language, a capacity for relationships governed by love and commitment, and creativity in all forms of art.” Love is already inside of us, created in us. The love is just waiting to be recognized, waiting to be let loose, waiting to grow. Some may have to reconstruct what love is because of the things that have happened, to find out how that love has been lost. I believe that if a person truly wants pure love bad enough they will search and find it. May you search for the love that lives inside of you and realize that you can’t bare to live without it. A love with compassion was freely given to you and already lives inside of you. If you have found that love may you continue to discover more.
