Imagine you are walking down an Indian road. You see probably cows, the road is dirty, there is trash everywhere, palm trees are surrounding you, and you hear horns everywhere around you notifying you in a friendly way that they are passing you. Looking to the left of you, you notice a man without eyes, a disfigured arm with bugs in his skin, and he is skin and bones. You see another man missing the skin on half of his face. You see a woman whose body is so swollen from infection.
What would you do? Would you walk away disgusted by his deformities? Would you walk away because you have no idea what to do? Or would you take him in and care for him?
Would you take seriously what Jesus says to his followers in Matthew?
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Matthew 25:34-36
Home of Hope in Southern India, takes what Jesus said seriously by taking men, women, and children in off the streets. They provide those who are dying alone, a place to get fed and cared for in a facility with others who have been on the streets. They feed them three times a day, give them a bed to sleep on, provide as much medical care as they can, and share the gospel to these individuals.
Once a man on the streets himself, the founder came to know Jesus Christ and felt led to care for the hopeless, disfigured, and often unloved individuals. He originally cared for them in his own home with his wife and children. Now, he had a building to care for approximately 200 women, more men, and some children who were on the streets.
We got the opportunity to go there today and be with the women and children. It was a sight I have never seen before. One lady was so excited to have a bunch of seeds that fell off of the tree above her. She was showing me her treasured possessions; she had no legs and couldn’t walk anywhere. She had a bunch of seeds in her pouch below where she was sitting. When she held them out for me to have one, it took all of me not to burst into tears. This woman was going to give me her treasured possessions when she had nothing. I found a seed nearby and gave it to her she got so excited it was like I bought her a car.
It is so beautiful to see people truly living out the Gospel through their actions. What will you do the next time you see someone hungry? Will you be too busy or will you help them?
