You wouldn’t know it, but these words were originally written by hand on the pages of a journal. “How nostalgically old fashioned!” you might think to yourself. Nope. My house has been in the midst of a major city-wide power outage since last night.
My seven roommates and I were let go early from the Adventures’ office because of a sleet storm. One of the staff members kindly made my house dinner to remind us that the Father doesn’t just want us to come to him, he wants to celebrate. When the prodigal son came back, of course the father embraced his long-lost son, but he also threw a huge party celebrating his return.
We finished dinner and moved to the living room, laptops and cell phones on. We read on social media how many of the CGA houses were losing power. We gloated to ourselves because it seemed like we would have the only house with power (so classy.) Shortly after that, we see a flash and hear the “CREEK—CRASH” of a tree falling. The lights in the house flickered and then shut off.
We lit candles sat around the living room. I mentioned how it would be nice if the power came back on so that I could work. My roommate Katie responded, “Listen to today’s Jesus Calling.” She read aloud the devotion:
“Thank Me for the conditions that are requiring you tobe still. Do not spoil these quiet hours by wishing them away, waiting impatiently to be active again…”
Yeah, that’s probably the right idea.
We had great conversations in the candle-lit living room, occasionally interrupted by the crashing of falling trees weighed down by ice.
The light of a flashlight made its way through our window. It looked like the neighbors needed help with their truck. Most of the girls got ready to leave. They asked me if I was coming. Cold icy rain? No thanks!
Brook, Sandra and I were the only ones left. I grabbed Sarah’s guitar and played some of the few chords I know.
Brook asked, “What song is that from?” It was Revelation Song. She grabbed her guitar and we went through the chords and began to sing it.
My other roommates came back and without saying much, Sarah grabbed her other guitar and Kay the drums and they joined in. We made up songs and sang some more worship songs.
Despite the ice storm and creaking trees outside, it was incredibly peaceful in the Little Circle House.
Thank you, Lord, for the conditions that are requiring me to be still.

Thank you for reading my blog! My time at the Center for Global Action (CGA) has been transformative. Through the classes and discipleship I jave gained skills, learned my natural gifts and have become closer to the Lord and more fruitful in the community. This time is preparing me for the calling God has for me.
CGA is a support-raised program, meaning I must reach financial deadlines through donations to stay. I’ve seen God’s faithful provision in reaching the deadlines through the genorosity of supporters time and time again.
My final deadline is March 1st, and I only have $1,750 left to raise! If you feel led to partner with me and become a monthly or one-time supporter, you can make a tax-deductible donation by clicking the “Support Me!” button on the left of this blog (the bottom if you are viewing this on your phone.)
Or if you’d prefer to send a check (this method avoids a 3% processing fee), you can send one made out to Adventures in Missions with my name (Stephanie Ransom) in the memo line to:
