We’re doing toy/food registrations at the church I work with. I’ve spoken with a lot of broken people who are
discouraged and in need this season. People in need of more than money.
People who need hope. People in our community who don’t know where
there next meal is coming from or if the electricity will stay on
another night to keep them warm. They express their thanks that someone
cares, that though it may be small someone in the area wants to try to
help (well most of the time). I love it, despite my frustration with accomplishing nothing work wise all week.

I especially enjoyed hanging out with
one little boy. His family showed up to register but stayed to help since they came at a time when our Benevolence team was slammed with a lot of people showing up at once. This little boy took my hand and walked over to the office with me
to get something to drink and asked about 50 questions in two
minutes.

He stood in front of the fridge trying to decide what to drink and as he grabbed a Dr. Pepper he looked up and said, “Do you have a cup so I can share?” He was precious, looking out for his mom
and sister before ever taking a sip.

Oh that we would learn to
consider others before ourselves like that.

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 3:2-4

He came back to me a little later and said, “May I have another drink? I shared the rest of mine with dad but I’m still thirsty.” Like I could resist. Ask and you shall receive, right? Of course, I gave him another Dr. Pepper. Call me a softie, it’s ok.

He may only be a young child but he gets it. He was so thankful for that drink and he was eager and happy to share it with his family. Are we that thankful for the small provisions in our life? Do we love others so much that we are willing to share our blessings to make sure they are taken care of?

I am
thankful today. Thankful mainly because no matter the look of things in
the natural my hope is in the work of the cross and resurrection. I
have someone to cling to that many do not. I am thankful for my friends
and family here and afar.
…and….
I am thankful for little boys and Dr. Pepper cans.
