All I know about service I learned from….pudding? Well, this probably is not completely true, but closeJ

Last week, I hung out with a few families from my home church in Milford, IA. The topic for the night was “What is service?” To kick off the night, we all participated in a pudding activity. We each had a bowl of chocolate pudding in front of us and a really long wooden pole attached to our arm with a spoon on the end of it. Our goal – to eat the pudding. Our predicament – we were physically not able to feed ourselves. So….basically the only way to eat the pudding is to feed each other. I highly recommend this experience! Fun is had for all – no matter the age!

Afterwards, we discussed what we had learned. Here are a few insights:

  1. Service is fun
  2. Service can be messy
  3. Service requires creativity
  4. By working together, we can better serve each other and get more accomplished
  5. By focusing first on others – meeting their needs – you, in return, will be “fed” spiritually…

Nothing revolutionary, but sometimes simplicity is what we need to get back to the heart of the matter. As Mother Theresa said, “Faith in action is love, and love in action is service”.
