Myers-Briggs tells me I weigh heavily on the “Perceiver” end of the spectrum. What does this mean exactly? To put it short, I tend to make spur of the moment, not very calculated, and sometimes rash decisions.
One may say this is a reckless way to live, but I would object that being reckless is not always a bad thing. But yet, it has its consequences.
Take it from the most reckless person to walk this Earth. He did not pause before deciding to heal the blind and the outcasts that suffered from leprosy. He did not calculate their number of sins before offering broken people forgiveness. And he did not have to write out an entire dissertation in order to prove religiosity was not the way to God’s heart. Jesus simply loved recklessly and did not think twice about it.
Yet all of Jesus’s actions had their unique consequences–each leading up to His own death.
The responses I have gotten from people about my decision to go on the World Race have been overwhelmingly encouraging, but also a bit terrifying. Reactions have danced a wide spectrum–from “Wow that’s amazing, you were born for this!” to “Wait, seriously, so you’re just going to leave your job? What happens when you get back? How are you gonna raise all that money?!”
It feels as though the responses I am getting are just audible reflections of the incessant questions that have been parading through my mind since I received my acceptance phone call. I do believe I was born for such a time as this. A time in my life when I am able to drop everything to live out of a backpack for a year and serve others. But on the other end, I do not know what comes next and there are still many questions that remain open ended. If I’m being honest, this has not been a very calculated decision.
But if I let that stop me, I wouldn’t be living like Jesus.
Come October I will be saying goodbye to comfort, security, and the community I love in order to step into unknown territory. It comes with many consequences. Some hopeful, some extremely challenging.
The truth is I can’t answer what exactly I just got myself into, but I am excited to find out.
