Google says a coincidence is, “a remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection.” While it is the safer route to interpret serendipitous moments as coincidental, I tend to lean toward the more dangerous route of believing there must be a far more intentional force behind certain occurrences. A causal connection, if you will.
A few days before applying for the World Race, I found myself up late at night flipping through Instagram in awe of the Racers who are currently embarking on this adventure. I jumped from page to page blown away by the snapshots of laughter, brilliant stories, and heart-warming pictures of children worldwide that danced across the different profiles. My heart tugged at every post; however, there was one that stuck out to me in particular.
I came across this photograph from a Racer that immediately made my heart to sink.
The Spanish reads, “The only race is the human.” Now while I was moved by the worlds on the billboard, there was something else that caused butterflies to bolt down to my stomach while, simultaneously, releasing an unexpected *yelp* from my mouth.
I instantly recalled an image that I created in college for my first ever Photoshop project three years ago. We were tasked with layering 14 different images into one by blending them together. No further direction was given than that. I created this image and named it the “Human Race”:
The similarity in these two images from the details used to depict different races and religions, down to the words that went along with them is amazing. I felt the Lord gently confirm that this was the exact path He wants to take me on.
Three years ago I had absolutely no idea of what the World Race is or even what the next step in my life after college would be for that matter. Here I am now, getting ready to embark on what might very well be the most life-altering experience I will ever have. I want nothing more than to serve Jesus and receive whatever He has for me in the process. This occurrence further solidified the desire I have to connect with humans of all races and backgrounds–letting each individual know they are known personally and deeply loved.
Now while I could have dismissed this as a mere coincidence, I felt the Kingdom of God break through in that moment. I was interacting with a dimension that is beyond my comprehension and because of His love, He used this cause to connect with me.
Wherever you are @sincerelystcyr, thank you for posting this photograph. Though I know it was not intended for me whatsoever, it has deeply impacted my life. Once again God spoke to me through Instagram…who would have ever guessed?
