God is distant. God doesn’t interact in our day to day lives. Miracles and healings are things of the past. They just don’t happen anymore.
This was my mindset before training camp.
But then, at training camp they preached the opposite. That God is moving and acting daily around the world. That God speaks to people directly and that He plays an active role in the world. I was told that we are called to live out the book of Acts and that stories like those in Acts are not just happy stories from long ago, but are actually happening here and now. But still, I was skeptical.
Then a girl on my squad got hurt during capture the flag. She went down hard, yelling in pain, and grabbing her ankle. So I held her hand while others gathered around to pray. I’ve been around a lot of injuries and have a pretty good grasp on “real” and “fake” and this was as real as they come. Then it happened, she suddenly stopped wincing, and looked up completely confused: the pain was gone. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only one that was a bit surprised when she stood up and started running around again.
There it was: the first healing.
Then, we picked our teams and left camp to “make a memory”. Driving down the highway, a homeless man popped his head out of a ditch. So we did the only normal, Christian thing to do: we pulled a u-turn and met him in the Wendy’s parking lot.. Well, as it turns out, our homeless man couldn’t see from cataracts in his eyes and wanted a large print bible so that he could read it. We didn’t have one, so Casey, my team leader, decided we should pray for God to heal his eyes instead, since that was the only normal, rational solution, right? So we prayed. and soon, there are tears and globs of snot flying through the air, all landing directly on my hand that was clenched tightly in his. After my hand and arm were about 90% covered, we stopped and went to leave when he started yelling that he could see. So Casey got out of the car and tested his sight, and returned to inform us that he could in fact see. Or at least that his sight was improving.
So what now? Do I really believe that God healed this man’s sight and my friend’s ankle? To be honest, I have no idea what to believe. But I have no rational explanations to describe what I saw, so the only option that remains is to chose to believe in the power of God. In the book of Matthew, Jesus commands us to “heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have
leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, so freely give.”
(Matthew 10:8). This is his command, so it must be possible, but still, I am skeptical. I’d be lying if i told you that I had absolutely no doubt that Jesus healed these two people. I’m not there yet, but I’m getting there. However, I do know that something big has happened in my life. Something has started to change. God is going to rock my world next year and I am fully confident that this will not be my last blog on healing because I just know that God has big things in store.
