Eat bugs? Spiders and insects crawling around me while I sleep? Not shower for five days? Squatty potties? 40 people on a mini bus?
I read all the blogs before I left for the World Race. I prepared myself. “Stacie you can do this.”
I imagined myself in those scenarios. I imagined how I would respond, how it would be hard but I would persevere.
Sitting in the middle of my big, fluffy, down bed with tv and air conditioning all the blogs I read about life on the field sounded crazy, but I craved it anyway.
Now six months in to this journey I have to tell you: it’s actually not crazy at all. In fact, it’s the new normal in my life.
I have been faced with all of those scenarios. And I didn’t even flinch. It didn’t require me to muster all my courage and persevere. In fact it didn’t stand out at all to me at the time.
You just do it.
Because this is how most of the world lives. And it’s not hard or crazy or even out of the ordinary.
It just is. So we just do.
In fact now, laying here in Zambia, hot, sharing a bed with my teammate, the craziest thing I can fathom is laying in the middle of a big, fluffy down bed with unlimited tv and air conditioning.
So if you’re reading this and you’re contemplating going on the race… Do it.
Embrace every moment of sweet adventure. And when you say yes…keep a journal. Don’t just start when you launch. Start when you apply. You’re going to love laughing at yourself when you’re six months in.
