Our first travel day of the World Race was met with only a few small hiccups along the way. After sleeping in the airport and waking at 4 am, our group of 14 was ready to check in. We only traveled with a small group today, because the logistics, myself and two others, and finance members of the squad traveled a day ahead of other racers for training.
While retrieving our boarding passes, our group was pulled to the side and asked to wait for further instruction. Apparently, its pretty shady when a group of Americans are traveling to a foreign country with a one way ticket and also have no clue when their return date is. But, after resolving that problem, we were on our way to the Dominican Republic.
Santo Domingo is beautiful. The inner city reminds me of Mexico, everyone drives crazy and mopeds are everywhere, but palm trees and the beach shore surround us. The people here are lively and friendly. Our first experience in the DR was spent at the local Supermercado buying food for ourselves and team members that will arrive tomorrow. We are learning to budget on a very small amount of money per day.
Its so weird to be in a grocery store and not be able to buy exactly what I want at that moment…its not just about me, its the entire teams money.
We will spend the week in Santo Domingo and then venture to our ministry contacts in Haiti and the Dominican Republic with our teams. We dont have internet access where we are staying so Im not sure when I will be able to update again. Know that Im safe and very excited about the next week of training and finally beginning the race!
I hope that everyone had a great Fourth of July. I was able to catch a few fire works before I left, which made me happy because I love celebrating the Fourth. Cherish the freedom that we have in America…Ive been reminded of that several times already. As always, please keep me and my team in your prayers. Much love!
p.s. I apologize for my lack of apostrophes and grammar. It drove me crazy, but the computer at the Internet cafe has different keys and I dont have much time…so I will take what I can get!
