Our entire squad of 52 people is living together this month. 52 people+2 showers+3 restrooms+a shortage of water+no Internet=true community. I thought I had living in community down from my first go around on the World Race, but I’m definitely being stretched and learning new ways to love others above myself.
When my field support in Georgia suggested that squad leaders tend to have a hard month when the entire squad is together, I kind of brushed it to the side. But, I’m finding that there are definitely struggles that come with living with 8 teams that I’m leading. I want for everyone to be heard. I want for everyone to feel loved by me. I want to speak truth into everyone. It’s overwhelming. It’s hard.
But, God is teaching me that I can’t be everything to everyone. That my voice is important in speaking truth over others, but it’s more important to teach this squad to use their own voices to build each other up.Through this, problems are arising that lead to hard conversations, which lead to breakthrough. I’m learning what it means to truly fight for relationships. It’s good!
A few facts about our ministry and where we’re living:
We’re the first teams to be hosted on the new property of our contact Tony’s ministry called “Don’t Miss the Opportunity”.
One of the incredible things about where we are living is that it used to be a popular night club. We’re literally living and worshiping in a place that used to be a breeding ground for the sketchiest activities in Tegucigalpa. The community walks by and wonders what is going on with all of the North Americans hanging out…people are drawn to the presence of the Lord.
We’re working with teenagers that have made the decision to leave their lives of huffing and living on the street, in order to be mentored by Tony and find a more fulfilling life in Christ.
Tony shared his heart with us and said “you can’t change the past and the future is too far ahead of you, so live in the moment and do what you can today.” It’s been such an incredible week of spending time with the squad and soaking up random moments of life with them.
