Growing up, I always heard the lesson from my parents to “be a servant”. Whether that was doing chores, helping out family members, or simply holding open the door, being a servant came in all shapes and sizes. I grew up learning to sacrifice my own wants and desires to help out the needs of others.

Now let’s fast forward to where I am today. Currently, I am working as…you guessed it! A server. A server’s responsibility is to make sure all the needs of the guest are fulfilled. Each day I go into work, I have the same motivation. At the end of the day, my motivation for each customer is to either 1) Make them laugh or 2) Make them smile. If I can accomplish these two things then I know I am doing a good job. I enjoy being a server because I enjoy helping people and making them laugh. My love for people, passion for helping others, and joy of seeing a smiling face all come from my childhood lesson of “being a servant”.

Little did I know, this lifelong lesson would translate into me going away for 11 months to help need around the world. I wonder how many people I can make smile just by giving everything of myself?

I know I am doing something that I do not know how to prepare for mentally. All I can say is God had this plan for my life way before I could ever realize and I will serve him joyfully.

“Serve the LORD with gladness.” Psalm 100:1

With much love,

Spencer
