Don't you just love how God likes to show up in the small things? It totally gets me pumped when I see Him in the small things, and that's exactly what happened to me yesterday. He showed up in the small things, and in a big way.
Yesterday was our first day of ministry. Our squad split up into our teams, and we were then assigned to different ministries for the day. Team Chainless was assigned to work at a children's home in the morning, and then construction in the afternoon. Now, for those who know me well know that these two things are totally up my ally…..like get me super excited! So how did God show up you might ask….well let me go a little further.
We walked over to the children's home, and began our orientation. They told us how these children, for the most part, come from a place of brokeness. A place of emotional, physical, sexual abuse. A place of neglect. A place of sickness. The list can go on and on. They split us up where the women from my team went to the girls side, and the men to the boys side…..but then there was a nursery. Well, you know where I was headed, right? Oh yeah….I walked my happy tail straight to that nursery to see some babies.
As I opened up the door, immediately a small boy ran right over to me…..threw his hands up, and wanted me to pick him up. So of course I grabbed him up as fast as I could and just hugged him. I had the cutest nugget ever in my arms (I love nuggets)! I pushed him on the swing, then carried him inside and we just played…..there was so much joy on his face…..seeing him smile and laugh…..priceless.
Later after lunch we were then assigned to construction….manual labor. I was all about this. I love feeling like I'm accomplishing something, watching progress happen, and just getting dirty. It's just so much fun! The goal was to clear out the mud from one location, and carry it to the children's home, because they are in the process of adding on to create a new addition. So we were each handed a pair of gloves, grabbed shovels, got some bags, and began to dig. Two people would break up the mud, two people would shovel the mud, two people would bag the mud, and two people would haul the mud to the truck. We were in "go" mode.
Through the sweat rolling down our face, back, and places I never knew sweat could roll….we pushed through. Through the aches and pains….we pushed through. Three trips later and it was done. It was probably one of the best workouts of my life.
So how did God show up through all of this? Let's start with the boy at the children's home. The way he reached up for me, and just wanted me to love on him…..reminded me of the way I am towards my own Father. How I just reach my hands up to Him, and just long for Him to pick me up, wrap His arms around me, and just give me some love and affection….and He always does! That is what He wants from all of us…..to be like children…..to reach our hands out to Him, and simply cry out "Hold me!".
The mud…..this was almost like a moment that my mom has frequently with things. We had this entire area of mud that had to be removed, and once it was cleared out it was ready for the next step. I saw this as how our lives our. That we have all of this mud in our lives….in our hearts. That if we allow God into our lives…He will slowly begin to dig up that mud clouding our view. Bag by bag He will begin to breakaway the mud….the mess in our lives. He will do this until it's completely cleared out, and ready for Him to use as He sees fit!
It's crazy to see that in one day God gave me all of this…..and through such small things. Aaaah Jesus! Isn't He so good?
