Five women, three squad leaders, a team from Texas and too many bugs to count have been my constant companions this week. We’ve had adventures getting lost, trying new foods and making new friends and losing a few on the way. If you have a sensitive stomach or are a friend to creepy crawling critters I advice you not to read this blog. (Just kidding it’s not that bad).
Now first I have to inform you we don’t have a washer/dryer. We fill a bucket with water and soap, scrub the clothes, rinse them off and allow to dry for a day or so on the clothes line.
Kelsey brought her clothes into her tent after they completed the “dry cycle”. As Kelsey was putting away her clothes she found a present. We will call him Mr. Roach, he made himself a home in her clothes. This became news to everyone by the sounds of her shrieking. Now our tents are our home, when I find a critter in mine the whole city knows it by my shrieking and screaming.
Our home at La Finca
After Kelsey threw the beast from her tent, Cicily gave Mr.Roach a good spray with some handy bug killer. None of us liked cockroaches when we were living in the states. Here in Costa Rica they are BIGGER and even more scary!
Also I was the one who had to dispose of the cockroach plus one more…my mommy and daddy would be so proud!
This week has been consumed with a few scary adventures. One being instructed by the bus driver to get off the bus on a different stop. We were a few blocks from La Finca our home with no idea how to get there. We still aren’t sure why we were told to get off on the most dangerous corner in the city.
Here is a view of the street of Los Guido
With little knowledge of Spanish we called our host and they had to give us step by step directions to get home. Here in Los Guido there are no street signs, hardly any Policia and NEVER white girls walking around without a guide. But we learned our lesson! First don’t talk to strangers, even if they speak English. Also never ever get off the bus until you are at your stop. Even if the bus driver is yelling at you in Spanish. If he calls the Policia then they can take you home!
My team and a team from Texas all worked together to repave La Finca’s drive way. I thought I knew laying concrete from growing up with my dad who flips houses. But here in Central America they do things a little different. After a day of making multiple trips across the road to the hardware store we finally had enough supplies to begin the transformation!
With a pick-ax in hand we tended to the old cement drive way to make way for the new concrete. After combining the cement, rocks and dirt we form the pile into a type of volcano style and fill it with water, mix and it’s off to the races! It was a hard labor, extremely messy and a lot of fun!
Also throughout the week we traveled through the street of Los Guido to meet and play with the local kids. Sharing the gospel through games, candy and songs we reached many young children around the city. I was used as a “table” for kids to grab candy off of during one of the games. Although I wouldn’t call my job being a “table” as much as I would call it a human sacrifice. But look at those smiles!!!
Another goal was to invite them to La Finca’s Sunday services and bonfire! Where we enjoyed delicious smores!
We enjoyed a service, worship, dinner and games! What an amazing first week we have had here at La Finca! We are sad to see the team from Texas and squad leaders leave but our prayers are with you.
If you would please keep the city of Los Guido in your prayers as there is much violence and gangs that have formed here. I learned that prosititution is also legal here if you could pray God put His hand over this city and heal the pain and problems that occur from it. Also I need to be fully funded with my $17,000 by April. Right now I am a little over $12K but will need prayer and help earning the rest of my funding. If God is speaking to your heart to help fund me please see the tab above “Support Me” to make a donation.
Thank you to all my monthly donors and subscribers for your support! Till next time! I love you all and you will be hearing from me soon.
