1. More hands make less work. Unless, of course, you’re pouring concrete. Then, you might as well accept you’re in for a long day and plenty of work.

2. When traveling through Northern Cyprus, bring a snack to share with the roving packs of wild donkeys.

3. Snails don’t taste any better pickled.

4. If you won’t scrub a toilet, you shouldn’t preach. Meaning, if you won’t serve people, you aren’t serving God.

5. National identity is a matter of opinion more often than we might be willing to admit.

6. Carib syrup is a labor of love. Unfortunately, if you don’t love the end product, it’s just a whole lot of labor. Do it anyway.

7. When nailing plastic to the makeshift door of an equally makeshift greenhouse, try not to fault yourself on the aesthetics, but feel free to laugh about it later.

8. Wear pants and long sleeves next time you find yourself defruiting a cactus. Gloves aren’t a bad idea either.

9. For the sake of Thanksgiving dinner, corn bread can always be cooked in a four-hundred-year-old brick fire oven by the heat of flaming olive branches.If you’re willing to ignore a little ash, the same goes for raw chicken, potatoes, and apple pie.

10. There are worse places to get a car stuck than on a deserted Mediterranean beach, but it’s always a bummer when it happens to be someone else’s car.
