A system mistake showed Dura McKnight’s fundraising account as $100 over her deadline to come to Training Camp, but a couple of days in, I realized she was actually $700 UNDER the deadline. She wasn’t supposed to be at Training Camp… Except she WAS supposed to be there, and her squad knew it.
We needed those funds in order to purchase her plane ticket, so we gave her the bad news that she had to call people and raise the required funds by the end of the day. Caught off guard, a few tears stood in her eyes but she listened carefully to what was required of her, mentally preparing to start calling donors back home. She was ready to fight, but the second her squad heard her predicament, they took the fight into their own hands.
“E SQUAD! Gather round, everybody over here!” They brought their heads together for less than a minute, and then came to where Dura was gathering her wits about her. 2 or 3 representatives presented their idea: “$700 between all of us is like $15 each, we can totally take care of that for you.” I know I was overwhelmed, and Dura standing next to me could hardly get a word out.
“Really? I… I… Whaaa? I can’t believe it,” She stammered with tears welling up in her eyes, looking from one face to another with unbelief. The squad scattered to grab their wallets, each person handing Dura $10, $15 or $20. Her face remained in a state of bewildered confusion, collecting the cash from one person after another. As I stood by, delighting in this show of unity and support, I had several others pull me aside.
“Whatever she has left, I will write a check.” The looks on their faces confirmed what I heard from every voice: “She is supposed to be here. And she is gonna stay here.”
Within 30 minutes, Dura had well over $700, in fact she had closer to $1,000. Dura McKnight is going on the World Race… She knows it, her squad knows it, and you can support her as well. Check out her blog at
