Ever heard of Jonathan David Helser? If you haven’t, you need to get a hold of some of his CDs, because that dude can WORSHIP. He is my spiritual role model right now, and I have been trying to follow the example he sets in pursuing the Lord’s heart and seeking spirit-filled worship. God has revealed so much to me about a true heart of worship; my favorite JD Helser song says: “Worship is the key, worship is my destiny, worship is the victory that releases the glory!” Worship opens up lines of communication to God that we may never discover in any other manner. He opens spiritual eyes, He reveals His word, He cleanses hearts, He breaks chains, He pours out His spirit and in general just wrecks havoc with our normal, complacent lives. And I love it.
Recently I have had the blessing of teaching the kids at our ministry site some new worship songs…. In SPANISH! That is always interesting, working in a foreign language. However, God worked in spite of my stumbling tongue as we learned, “Cambiare mi Tristeza,” known to us English speakers as: “I’m Trading my Sorrows.” The kids love that song, and sing and dance with joy when they yell out: “Si Senor, si, si senor, si senor, si, si senor…” It makes my day to sing and dance with kids, there is truly nothing I enjoy more.
There is such freedom to be found in worship, and those kids have found it. Every time I see them, they eagerly ask to sing songs with them. When I play, they take over the song, singing loudly, never letting it end, never letting it die down and singing their favorite parts over and over again. I literally have to forcefully bring worship to a close because my fingers hurt from playing and just today I busted a string on my guitar. They have discovered the joy and freedom in worship…. Oh God, let me always be like a child.
