The people I have met in Uganda are some of the friendliest, happiest people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. They are quick to smile and say “Hello!” or to ask what all of us “mzungus” (white ones) are doing in Africa. One of these amazing people I got to know was Maria…she now refers to herself as our “Uganda momma”. We met her one day while shopping in the local market, and she boldly asked a few of my teammates to bring her a pair of shoes. On the way home, I remembered that I’ve been carrying a pair around for the past three weeks that I have only worn twice and had little to no intention of wearing again. It turns out that God knew we had the same shoe size and that I wouldn’t need that extra pair of shoes when He sent us here, because they fit her like a glove when I brought them to her the next day. She had tears in her eyes and did a little dance for us when she put them on, thanking us again and again…but the beautiful big smile that she wears on her face is the greatest “thank you” that we could’ve received. I pray to have many more moments like this along our journey, not only giving out of our excess to those who have material needs, but also sharing a moment of laughter and prayer as each one of us recognizes God’s hand of provision for everyone involved. She sent us on our way with some of her “matooke” (bananas) as a thank you and made sure we knew how much she’ll miss us. I sure will miss her and these wonderful people as we move along to Rwanda in the next few days.
