Squatty potties, bucket showers, and cooking with rain water! Take a glimpse into the life of Cambodian villagers as I share with you about my living situation during my month in the village of Kampot, Cambodia. Enjoy the tour of a simple, yet relaxing life…I know I did!

This is the compound where we lived in Kampot, Cambodia. Our contact Vuthy has been blessed to build all of it from the ground up and start the school there. Yes, the cows were part of our little family!

The main building that housed our 2 dormitories, 2 bedrooms for our contact, and the 4 bathrooms.

The girls dorm consisted of 6 sets of bunk beds with a mattress and pillow. We purchased our own mosquito nets. There was a small ceiling fan and one outlet with a power strip attached.

2 of our 4 bathrooms complete with the Asian toilet of choice: a squatty potty! and the bucket on the left that was filled with water from the backyard lake. We used this and a pail to take bucket showers. There was also a sprayer that used lake water.

Our kitchen in Cambodia complete with a portable stove and delicious spices that Vuthy’s mom (above) used to cook us meals. She was awesome! Every meal consisted of rice and 2 of the following dishes which rotated every meal: meat, veggies, egg (fried or omelet style), or noodles. We ate oatmeal and fruit for breakfast.

Containers that store the rain water that is used for doing laundry, cooking food, bathing, and sometimes drinking.

A Cambodian way of transportation, the tuk-tuk, was how we got around the village to teach at the public school and go to the market.

Hammock city! This was a great place for us to relax and have quiet time when the breeze was blowing. Such a great way to appreciate God for the beauty of His creation.

The classrooms where we taught English to the local kids.

The original church building that Vuthy built for the people of the village. He hopes to build a bigger, open air church within the next month.

It was definitely a month of living differently that I had in America but there was a certain beauty in the simplicity of it and it was an honor to live like the people we were serving. Thank you Kampot for your hospitality!
