Travel Day to Indonesia was a success!
This saga was much easier than the first month, but still a story worth telling.
We left Byron Bay, Australia late in the evening on Friday, February 9 to drive to the Brisbane Airport, where we spent the night.
Early in the morning, we checked in and took a 7am flight to Bali.
Easy Peasy!
We had a 4 day layover in Bali filled with:
Making friends at Hillsong Bali Church
Visiting local rice terraces
Martabak
[an AMAZING dessert I’ll write about in a blog later]
A Water Temple sunrise
Kopi Luwak
[coffee beans that have been eaten and digested by an animal called a luwak]
A monkey forest
White water rafting
Gelato
Lots of good conversation and team prayer
From our city in Bali, we took a taxi to the bus station.
Then a bus to a ferry.
The ferry took us to the island of Java.
Where we took another bus from the city of Surabaya to the city of Semarang.
In between all of that, we had:
A taxi driver who took us to the wrong bus station
Authentic Indonesian Cup of Noodle
Several trips to the squatty potty
A midnight snack stop for noodles and rice
A bus driver who smoked cigarettes while he drove
A 3am nap in a bus station
Several near death occurrences as our driver attempted to pass every other car on the road, often playing chicken with cars, trucks, and motorbikes on the opposite side of the road
A flood…or two…of several feet of water that everyone kept driving right through
I wish I could more accurately describe all the feels involved in traveling in Southeast Asia.
But all I can give you is a quick snapshot.
It’s loud.
Everybody is very close together, both on the road and in the vehicles.
I think we’re actually supposed to be driving on the left.
I’m not sure what that sound is, but I hope whatever is making it doesn’t break.
As you drive to wherever you’re going today, I hope you enjoy the simplicity of a place that stops at the red lights and keeps one car per lane.
