Rwanda is a beautiful nation with wonderful people. I felt it deserved to be expressed in a poem of sorts. I thank God that he allowed me to see and be apart of another one of his wonderful creations.

Soil that Sparkles

Maraho, Amakhuru? Nemaiza*

“Land of 1000 hills”

The night air gives you the chills

Traditional dresses made of colour and frills

Mutinze, Muqueza, Mutonie, O’Wella, Mukundwa, Keza**

Hallelujah? AMEN!

Hear the echos of the voices

Giving glory to our God most High

Soaring up into the night sky

I let out a big sigh

As the congregation dances and rejoices

Hallelujah? AMEN!

The bright red soil has a glisten

It speaks of hope, joy and love

As God brings healing and Peace, like a dove

Lives are transformed by the one from above

I’m reminded to look, feel and listen.

Hallelujah? AMEN!

Bananas – Boil, bake, steam and fry

Coffee and tea

When the mist lifts that’s all you see

On the drive from Kublai to Kigali

The children come running, “muzungu” they cry

Hallelujah? AMEN!

I was sad to depart

Poured into, loved and blessed

My level of faith addressed

Not a moment of being stressed

Rwanda – you captured my heart

Hallelujah? AMEN!

We have felt nothing but joy and hope in a nation that just over a decade ago experienced one of the worst genocides known to man kind. A nation that is hungry for God and the promise of unconditional love and eternal life with him. Their worship is fill of joy and dancing and their prayers are passionate and powerful. I am humbled and blown away by the numerous testimonies we have heard. Testimonies of child soldiers, genocide survivors, starvation, imprisonment and yet every house we have visited they have opened their doors wide and welcomed us.

I have been so humbled as they keep referring to us being here as such a huge sacrifice on our part, they are just blown away that we would take a year out of our lives to devote completely to the Lord. But what is even more humbling is seeing their life styles and how hard they work for things that we in the western world generally take for granted. What they don’t realize is how much we learn from them.
