Street life is nuts here! I hear traffic laws exist, but from what I can tell, they might as well not. Nineteen out of twenty vehicles are motorbikes. There is a solid sea of movement wiht no stop signs or traffic lights. There is so much confusion that a part of the police force is deligated to help foreigners cross the streets. Upon coming to a street, whether at a corner or somewhere in between, I just have to walk into the street and cross swiftly. I’ve had to abandon everything I’ve ever learned about looking both ways and waiting for a clear path with assured distance. Those rules do not apply in Vietnam, just cross and the sea of motorbikes, trucks and taxi’s will mold around me. No one stops at intersections or roundabouts….EVER. Every turn creates a game of chicken. As a driver, you have to either be super defensive or super bold because a lukewarm driver WILL do severe damage!
Uses for a motorbike:
- Easily transport a family of five
- Easily transport fresh eggs to market
- Get a giant framed mirror home from the gallery
- Carry home all of a family’s groceries for the week
- Slyly go the wrong way for a long period of time with no one noticing (except me who is on the back preparing myself to meet Jesus face to face!)
- Carry two men and a regular mattress on a main road
- Carry live chickens, ducks, seafood, and dogs, yes, you heard me, DOGS, to the meat markets in saddle “bags”
- Pull a trailer with a decent amount of small hogs to a farm and a few huge hogs to market
Natural entertainment for the month! Hopefully more to come sooner, rather than later! Much love friends and family and people who take the time to read my blogs!
