Valentine’s Day in Haiti
My Valentine’s day began with being able to sleep in to 8 or 8:30am however I was awake at 7:30am. The three guys on Team Kioninia made chocolate chip pancakes and apples and oranges they ran to florida and Michigan to get. (It was imported fruit and a pleasant change from bananas) The pancakes were marvelous. Thank you for our guys and their thoughtfulness.
We decided to go to a resort on the beach which was supposed to cost $10 American dollars for the day and it includes lunch. When we got to the resort the prices had increased and it cost $25 to enter. After unsuccessfully trying to get in for cheaper we decided to just bite the bullet and pay. The resort was gorgeous. The water was crystal clear and the perfect temperature. It was so nice to have a chance to lay out in a nice beach chair and relax by the ocean. We ate lunch at tables on the beach overlooking paradise. I had a wonderful hamburger and fries, which was a nice change from rice. While at the beach we encountered a man who was from the Orlando area and he allowed both Kara and Ashley (Team Blingers) to have a ride on his jet ski. I was a bit jealous to miss out because I love jet skis but it was a blast to watch Ashley go crazy on it.
Later that night we had agreed to go to a Haitian Christian concert for Valentine’s day. The concert was scheduled to start at 6pm, so at around 7pm we all piled into the back of a pick up truck. So with about 13+ people in the back of a pick up driving through some of the bumpiest roads ever trying not to fall out. It was like a free rollercoaster ride. The concert mostly reminded me of men’s 50’s duewap groups. I didn’t understand a word of it but it was good. There were also random fireworks and our specific group was served glasses of champagne. After the concert our 13+ people hopped back into the back of the pickup for another rollercoaster ride home.
Let’s just say that I had an unforgettable Valentine’s Day here in Haiti.
On another note I have a cool God story. One of the boys here, Jason fell and broke his arm in two places. They took him to the Saint Marc hospital (the one we visited) and they casted it. However they did not set his arm properly and they had to take him back. They went back to the hospital two days later and were told to return the next day. Well, Sister Gladys (the woman in charge of Canaan) was having none of that and took Jason to Port Au Prince to see a good doctor there. Well, because of what they did at Saint Marc’s hospital Jason is going to have surgery on his arm this Wednesday. The God thing came in when Liz was talking with Sister Gladys and found out that they needed $6000 haitian dollars which is about $750 American dollars for the surgery. Well, our teams had just gotten $1300 American dollars to give to Sister Gladys for our staying here. She said aahhh there is the money, Praise God he provided. The timing of it was of God because getting money from the bank in Port Au Prince which is two hours away is quite a feat. So please pray for Jason’s surgery to go well.
Thank you for all your prayers. It has been a wonderful experience here at Canaan. I will have one more blog to post and another video of my time in Haiti coming. Sorry for no pictures but the internet is too slow to up load them, I will add them once I have access for faster internet.
