(We´ve already been here a week, but I think the full version of how we got here is a story in need of telling)

I’ve
been excited about this trip from the moment I heard about it, so it´s no wonder that the past few months have been full of anticipation and
excitement.
And now, the adventure has officially begun.

I
think our launch story will be one for the world race books. It began well,
everything was well planned and we all knew what was supposed to happen. The
squad was to meet in Miami on Saturday June 28th in order for us all to catch
our 7:00 am flight to Mexico city the following morning. Starting at 6:30 pm
and going until 12:45 am, we all managed to arrive safe and sound in Miami. So
far, so good.

After
a night in the airport, curled up in our sleeping bags on the floor in a
secluded hallway, all 32 of us boarded our flight to Mexico City
without a hitch. Once in there our squad leader, Stephanie, and two other
racers boarded an early flight to Cancun leaving the rest of us to relax for a
little while before our flight later that afternoon. After some lunch and relaxation we
boarded our second flight of the day with smiles on our faces and eager
curiosity about what was to come.

In two hours we had landed in Cancun,
collected out bags and were reunited with the other three members of our squad.
With excitement still mounting some of us began to speculate whether or not we
would be racing to Palenque.* It was soon announced that we would indeed be
racing to see which team
could navigate
the bus system and get to Palenque the fastest. We prepared by repacking bags for optimal weight distribution, putting on our best
running shoes, and grabbing a map and staking out our plan of attack. Again, so
far, so good.

And
then the fun began…

* There is a race portion of The World Race. Ideally
each squad will race once a continent. The race could be racing from
one city to the next or it could be more of a scavenger hunt type deal in a selected
city.
