The more time I spend out in on the race the more I think about one day leading a world race squad myself. The idea of seeing God work in even more ways, watching a new group of people become passionate about Jesus, and traveling the world once more is exhilarating. Partly because of that and partly due to divine planning I have had the opportunity to take on some leadership roles over the past few months.
In swazi, I helped organize and run the vision trip for the whole squad. My time there, although short, was a great chance to grow in the area of leadership and it showed me how much I enjoy having that role. I thought my brief moment of leadership was over after Swazi, but as we began our journey up to Malawi, Josh, feeling lead by the Lord, asked if I would like to try my hand at leading our small team. I knew that it would be easier just to say thank you and no, however, when God gives you an opportunity to grow you take it.
For our 3 weeks in Malawi I was the team Pi leader, or as our contact, Harrison, called me, the President. It was not without its fair share of difficulties and unexpected challenges, but for the most part I really enjoyed it. God has been teaching me a lot about what it means to lead in a Godly way, not relying on myself, but on Him.
Here are just a few of the lessons I learned from my time in Malawi…
It’s not about me and my abilities or me and my plan,
it’s all about God.
Being a successful leader doesn’t mean everything goes according to plan.
Communication and unity are the first places the enemy will attack.
I can only lead by God’s strength, I’ll fail if I rely on my own.
Hakuna matata, TIA, and C’est la vie are all good mottos to keep stress levels down while leading in Africa.
Please keep me in your prayers as I continue to grow and learn in the area of leadership.
