God is so good. I can’t say it enough.
These past few weeks my team has been thrown into what most of us were most anxious about: door-to-door evangelism. We literally knock on random people’s doors in neighborhood we have never been to and share the gospel with them using a bracelet. As the weeks have gone on we have gotten more and more comfortable with this, however the past two days were expected to be a little different. Our host had signed us up to work with a church that has a pretty strict doctrine, one that we as primarily nondenominational christians don’t exactly agree with. We went into these days completely dreading them.
He sent us to the roughest neighborhood we have seen so far. The streets were full of children, music and life, but also filth. These are the people that touch our hearts. As we went door to door, we were welcomed in to many homes and the Gospel was shared in homes with dirty, concrete floors.
On our second day in this neighborhood we had planned to end the day early because we were exhausted and made plans for our weekend, but also (if we’re being honest), we didn’t want to plan any more time with this church than we had to.
God gave us something different, however.
One of our teammates had challenged a group of niños to a soccer match with us, the US Women’s championship team (as our host deemed us). With only a few experienced soccer players, we played almost an hour long game. The kids laughed at us when we tried to speak to them (in English or Spanish) and when we fumbled with the soccer ball, but it was so much fun!
And at half time, we got the chance to evangelize to everyone at the field. And to my surprise these kids, who were mostly between the ages of 7 to 14?, actually responded and some decided to accept Christ into their heart today.
After they said the sinners prayer together, German, our host asked them, “where is Christ now?” A few said, “en mi casa.” Or “in heaven”. One boy, the shouted, “¡Oh, en mi corazón!” (In my heart) To which German responded, “that’s right, Jesus now lives in your heart.”
We finished our game (which we won! 6-7), and said goodbye to all the niños as well as the church members who had stayed to cheer us on.
Today was the. best. day. It’s funny how God can take the day we are most dreading and make it great. I’ll say it again, He is good.
