Peru!

Hey hey so my team and I have been here in Peru for about a week and a half now and in this blog I’ll summarize what life looks like here!

So we will be in Peru for a month and for that month rather than being all 40 something of us as a whole squad it is just me and my team here in Pacasmayo.

Pacasmayo is a beautiful tiny surf town here in Peru! Life is a lot slower here than in Quito and I must say I love it.

This month we are partnered with a local church here in town. They have an after school program for kids where we teach English classes. We also teach English classes that are open for anyone in the church. Along with all our English teaching we spend our mornings cleaning and get to work with the youth group here to do something pretty cool. Right now we are busy learning tons of dances and some skits that we are going to perform on the beach as a way of evangelism. It is seriously so much fun and I have a real special place in my heart for youth group kids so it is such a treat to be able to get to know them and hangout with them!

On off days you can find us at the beach which is a short walk from where we stay.

Or you can catch us blowing up an oven.

Don’t worry we are all okay! Here’s the scoop: on Saturday (the only day we have to cook for ourselves) as we were making dinner (trying to be very careful in Cellas kitchen because she loves her kitchen) we were trying to figure out how to light the oven. (None of us had experience with gas ovens). So as we are all gathered around it, we try lighting in one spot and it doesn’t seem to be working so obviously we figure we must need to light somewhere else. So as Dan reaches into the oven to try a different spot there is a HUGE explosion I’m not kidding seriously like wow it was scary. The whole oven flies off the ground and falls over and the pots and pans that were cooking on top come at us. And I don’t even really remember anything except all our screams as we sprint out of the kitchen. At this point dan is crying, I think her face is burnt off, we all think there’s a second explosion coming soon and that the whole kitchen is going to catch fire. Then dan falls on the floor in the next room over and Madison is like “heck no this place is going down and you aren’t going with it” (essentially) so she picks Dan up and rushes her outside. And the rest of what you really need to know is Dans foot is burned but she is okay, we are all okay only suffering from some burnt hair, eyebrows, and lashes (seriously thanks God!). Also thanks to SJ cellas oven is okay! And Gods hand of protection was over us! He’s good y’all!

Some other fun things about being in Peru: there were rats in our room (don’t worry our host killed them for us) there was a Scorpion in my bag (don’t worry Liv killed it) , there was a huge cockroach in my shoe (don’t worry I killed it), there’s 500 flies in our house at all times, and I love sleeping with my mosquito net because it makes me feel like I’m a princess. Also Liv met Oprah in her dream and was sleep talking all about it!

All in all Peru is really great and this time here has been so sweet… truly love it here and am so excited for everything God has in store for us the rest of our time here! Oh also he’s really using this time to grow our team and allow us to dive in deeper and choose each other daily and it’s just super dope on a rope! Thanks for tuning in love y’all!
