Ok, I am giving that cultivating a creative mind thing a shot. I have spent the last couple hours here at Starbucks reading about a subject that i will write about later.
We are sitting here at starbucks using up the rest of our 24 hour TMobile wireless pass and I have been spending my time studying ARETE. The word Arete is Greek for excellence. In Philippians 4:8 this is the word that Paul tells us to think about, to dwell on.
I first heard about Arete in a humanities class when I was 20 and that is what I called my first personal training business. I don’t know what brought this word back to me, but it came up in a discussion with Seth and Linnea as we were driving.
So I am writing this blog to prepare the soil of my mind to discuss Arete more, and I think we will use that name in our future business endeavors. We also hope to further instill the concept of arete in the world racers.
I believe Arete (pronounced with the last e having a long a sound) is similar to the idea of the ‘World Race’. When a person is living true to themselves, true to their identity in Christ, living excellently, fully alive, they are pursuing Arete. (sidenote: arete is also the name for a sharp ridge on a mountain) I believe the world race is similar to the story of Herakles choosing virtue over vice, its a cool story, and when a person chooses to go on the ‘World Race’ they are making a similar decision. A truly heroic decision.
So stay tuned, I still have to discuss Jesus and stress and adrenaline and arete…seeds planted, now let them germinate, and hopefully I will find the optimum arousal to reap the fruit. If you don’t know what I am talking about, read my last blog on adrenaline and creativity.
