God is continuously teaching me what it looks like to be a servant…

A servant of God.

A servant to my team.

A servant to the community around me.

In the Bible, Jesus was the perfect example of what it looks like to be a servant. We read over and over how He came to serve, rather than to be served.

Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mind blown!!

”You mean, the world doesn’t actually revolve around me?” -Schyler

Often times, I seek to be served, rather than follow Jesus’ example of being a servant to all. Sure, I have no problem serving others. However, God quickly convicts me of my motive. I feel I operate out of a false self by serving others not because I always want to, but because it will make me look better in the eyes of others.

Questions I often ask myself:

”Do I truly believe that I am blessed to be a blessing, rather than be blessed?”

”What will I gain from this?”

”Would you serve the same way even if no one was watching?”

Jesus never had this mentality. He never expected anything in return. He wanted to love others by simply serving them. In the Bible, we get this picture of Jesus serving and then retreating to a quiet place, avoiding all affirmation from man. He walked in confidence knowing He was blessed to be a blessing. Never did we see Jesus seeking blessings for Himself. It was never about His gain, but about the gain of others. What a beautiful picture!

While on the Race, there have been many instances where I have failed at being the servant I am called to be. After stepping off of my high horse and removing my crown (lol), I am quickly humbled by the Lord. He gently reminds me of the fact that it’s not about me, but about painting this very same picture that He painted for us.

Perspective shift:

Rather than expecting others to do for me, why not ask the same question Jesus did?

”What do you want me to do for you?”

Only if I were to walk in confidence and know that I am blessed to be a blessing, to love others unconditionally expecting nothing in return, and to serve others wholeheartedly, only then will I be reflecting the image of God.

Hebrews 6:10 “For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for Him. And how you have shown your love to Him by caring for others.”

Challenge!!!

This week, find one way every single day to serve someone in your family, one of your friends, or in your community!

Afterwards, comment below how you intentionally served someone. 🙂
