Dear Scarlett,

2016 is officially here and it’s going to be a big one. You leave in just a few days to embark on an amazing adventure.  For years, you’ve prayed, dreamed, and prepared for this (sometimes without even realizing it).  I am so proud of you. I know this journey hasn’t been easy. There have been moments of uncertainty, doubt, and fear.  I know sometimes you don’t know exactly what you’re doing but that’s okay.  Thankfully, you serve a God that does…

Here are a few things I’d like you to remember while you’re away:

  1. Be brave. Don’t be afraid to take a few risks on the Race. Step outside your comfort zone and remember bravery comes in many different shapes and sizes…Somedays it may be eating foreign foods, praying for a stranger, or maybe even just having the courage to say “That didn’t work but I’ll try again tomorrow.”
  2. Keep an open mind. You are going to be tested in new ways this year.  Open yourself up to the process. Every single person you meet is going to know at least one thing you don’t. Take the time to listen.
  3. Live in the moment. You only get to live each day once and they are all different.  Not many people can say they get to live out their dream so don’t take a single minute for granted. Make each day count. Dance, be silly, create memories, play with kids, talk to strangers, fall in love with your life and the many things in it. Don’t come home with a list of regrets, make the most of each situation.
  4. Let go. Exodus 14:14 says, “The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still.” I know this one will be tough as you’re used to the illusion of control. Find peace this year in trusting the Almighty with your destiny. Allow Him to show you the plans He has in store for you and rest in His blessed assurance.
  5. Fall in love with Jesus…all over again. Remember the days of calling God up to talk on the play phone? Remember the nights of never ending prayers talking about your day bit by bit and the lengthy list of thanks? Find that again. Rediscover why you decided to be a Christian in the first place.
  6. Don’t hide. You were put here for a reason. Right here, right now. Take down your walls. The shell you hide in will suffocate your brilliance, so step out and shine bright.
  7. Love without hesitation. Love hard.  Don’t think about leaving, don’t think about the goodbyes, don’t rationalize the risks.  While you are there, love every person you meet for as long as you can.  Give it all you’ve got.
  8. Don’t put God in a box. He hung the stars in the sky and knows every freckle on your face. He is capable of all things. Be excited to see what He’ll do this year in your life and those around you.

Buckle up, kid. This is going to be a year full of great things, far away places, challenging experiences and so much more. I’m so excited for you. Now go get packed…

All my love,

Scarlett
