Wow! It’s crazy how the Christmas season has come and gone. Our Tennessee Christmas went from “feeling hot hot hot” to “baby, it’s cold outside” over the last few days.
You may have spent yesterday packing up all of your Christmas decorations (which for my roommate and I the last few years would’ve been shoving the Christmas tree into the coat closet… decorations and all), relaxing on the couch from the whirlwind of entertaining family or taking advantage of the “day after Christmas” sales.
Whatever you did, you’re forced to come to terms with…the Christmas season is over. The season of love, giving, and forgiveness is over.
So now what happens? On to the New Year, Valentine’s Day, Easter, etc. I guess. The cycle continues.
Every year, I drive about 2 ½ hours north of Memphis to enjoy the holidays with my family in Obion County. I don’t mind the drive because it gives me time to pray, reflect, and jam out to music. On my way home, a song I had never heard came on the radio: “Christmas Everyday” by Unspoken. Besides the cool, reggae beat, it had a strong message. Here are some of the lyrics:
Tell me why do we wait 364 days
To slow down and stop
Remember how blessed we are
So we’re trading in the wish list
All the things we never needed
Let love fill up our hearts
All year we should remember
Remember how blessed we are
We don’t need lights
We don’t need snow
If we’ve got the faith
Then we’ve got the hope
Through the year, we don’t have to wait
Cause it’s Christmas everyday
Can you hear the angels sing
Let the love in your hearts be the gift you bring
And put a smile on someone’s face
Now it’s Christmas everyday
Y’all! These lyrics are spot on. December is my favorite month. Just think about it. People are giving out food to families less fortunate, restoring ties with friends and family, and a bulk of radio stations are playing Christmas music and referencing the birth of Jesus.
I could go on and on.
Think about the Salvation Army bell ringers standing in the cold. Those are volunteers. People are giving, loving and forgiving others and to add sprinkles to the cupcake, “Merry Christmas!!” is a phrase you hear at least 20 times when you’re out and about.
But why just December? We live in a society that tells us our waistline, social media following and bank account sizes lead to happiness. I often fall into this trap too. But then I have to stop and ask myself: Does it give me happiness or joy? They’re different, ya know.
Happiness is a temporary feeling. It comes with a season or moment in life, adds some giggles and then leaves. However, joy comes from God. It’s a sense of peace deep down in your heart. It’s constant.
When you have joy [GOD] in your heart, God’s light radiates out. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) Let HIS LIGHT radiate out. Not only in the month of December. Not only when people are showing love toward you. But always.
Here’s a challenge for this week: Try to make someone’s day better… Even if it’s by simply being a good listener, holding a door open or bringing someone coffee. Get creative and love others.
By loving, giving and forgiving, let’s keep up the Christmas spirit!
Love y’all!!
