During our first week of ministry I was able to grow in community with the Haitian community. Though often times I feel like the language barrier makes it really difficult to bond. I wanted to truly emmerse myself into their culture ana I’ve been learning creole. Though I find it even more frustrating that I can start conversations but cannot hold them when trying to build relationships in the community. But Nono, the man in this picture, was the first person I feel like I was able to really connect with. He is a sassy, music loving, kind hearted soul. Quickly after meeting we communicated he did not know English and I only knew a tiny bit of Creole. We figured out we knew the basics of French and were able to talk. Crazy how God can use a class I dreaded in high school to later help me love on others. He asked if he could teach me something in Creole. He taught me the phrase “Jezi Renmen Ou Chak jou” which I later learned meant “Jesus loves you everyday.” Nono really understand the importants of Jesus’ live and wanted to help me share that with others. It was a refreshing reminder that as nice as it would be to have full on conversations, what is most important was to spread the love of God. The rest of the time we sang worship songs together and seeing the pure joy he had in the simplicity of what we were doing taught me so much about how we should live out our lives. I’ve learned so much from him and our time visiting the Matthew 25 home and I look forward to visiting again. We do have translators most of the time but sometimes we find ourselves without one so I’ve learned how to ask if we can pray for others. When this happens God knows what thet need prayers for and has no language barrier. Praise God for crumbling all barriers. For he calls for one church so as a song we sing alot states let the praises go up as the walls come down. I’ve loved witnessing God take down all the walls that have stood in our way and being fully confident he will continue to do so.
